I think that this is similar to the idea of networking. People obviously are networking to build a connection that may benefit them in the future, however the way it is done can make the difference in if you choose to engage or not.
With products, I'd say that hooking people in a way that is genuine, transparent, and keeps the user in the driver seat with setting control is key. Tactically, this can look like making sure users know where setting controls are or adding UX friction where consequences can be detrimental.
