Dear Jim,

First, I’d like to thank you for your support. It means a lot to me and I appreciate your passion.

I agree with you, and this problem is a hard problem for a reason. Real change happens when incentives are created. As a student from a bootcamp, I can say that UX ethics was not heavily emphasized. It’s not in the bootcamp’s best interest to teach you in depth — it is to serve you quick education and convert your skills into a job. Something tells me that tech leaders did not expect their products to create such catastrophic, real world consequences, as humans are generally not skilled at making accurate predictions. But more people pushing for ethical design, there will be more incentive to prioritize it.

Designing mindfully is an effect of internal and external advocacy for principles that support positive short-term and long-term user experience. Please continue your advocacy. The world needs it.
